Abstract

This article introduces the special issue ‘Touristed: European Travellers, Host Communities and the Production of Local Culture’, which emphasises the importance of host communities in creating and sustaining the tourist industry across ‘modern’ Europe. It focuses on the active and complex roles hosts played in the production of local culture between 1880 and 1940 – a time when the consumption of standardised local culture became an inherent and essential aspect of the tourist experience.
