ABSTRACT First Person is a series of interviews with the first authors of a selection of papers published in Biology Open, helping researchers promote themselves alongside their papers. Michael Flores is first author on ‘ A subpopulation of cortical neurons altered by deletion of the autism risk gene DDX3X’, published in BiO. Michael conducted the research described in this article while a research assistant in Silvia De Rubeis's lab at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, USA. He is now a PhD student in the lab of Michael Brainard at University of California, San Francisco, USA, investigating how intrinsic developmental processes interact with sensory experience to form inter-individual variations in learned behaviors.
