In his travelogue titled On Horseback Through Asia Minor, Frederick Burnaby recounts his travels to Anatolia in 1876–7, detailing his observations and experiences. In the introduction of his work, Burnaby thoroughly explains the reasons for this journey. During his travels in Turkey, Burnaby gathered intelligence on how effectively the Turks could resist Russian expansionism and published his findings in the form of a travelogue. Despite detailing his arrival in and departure from Anatolia, his work lacks comprehensive documentation. To partially address this gap, this research unveils previously unpublished official correspondence between Burnaby and the Turkish Embassy in London. Primarily, due to diplomatic requirements, Burnaby had to obtain permission from the Turkish Embassy before setting out on his journey to enter Turkish territories. Only after securing the necessary permit was he able to cross into the borders of the Ottoman Empire. To this end, he engaged in a series of diplomatic correspondences with the Turkish Embassy in London and had to negotiate to obtain the required permission. As to this issue, he simply states that ‘[b]efore leaving London I thought that it might be as well to write to the Turkish Ambassador and ask him if there would be any objection on the part of the authorities in Constantinople to my proposed journey in Asia Minor’1 in the introduction of his work.
