Abstract Editor’s note: This chapter was commissioned in recognition of Martin Rudwick’s transformative contributions to the history of geology, deep time sciences, and earth history. Unlike other contributions to this volume, it is autobiographical and personal. Rudwick’s career is, in itself, a microcosm of modern historiography of earth and environmental sciences, and we are honored to have his personal reflections in this collection. We hope that readers unfamiliar with Rudwick’s career and accomplishments in this field will benefit from getting to know him in this way, and that those readers familiar with his scholarship will enjoy this insight into his life’s work as a historian.
