Abstract This introduction explores sociology’s late entrance to the study of digital media and highlights the value of a sociological lens in helping us re-recognize them as extraordinary even as they begin to feel mundane. We then outline the theoretical and substantive contributions of this volume and its theoretical interventions into existing conceptualizations of the digital self, digital economy, and digital society. The volume explores the way digital media affect key social institutions, influence understandings of identity and community, and reproduce (as well as challenge) social and political inequity. The chapter concludes with a call for sociologists to engage in more interdisciplinary endeavors and to shift their focus beyond North America, Europe, and Australia.
