Field stations such as Centre ValBio (CVB) in Madagascar serve as hubs for conservation research and educational programming. We developed and tested a program assessment protocol on CVB’s Conservation Club (CC) program to evaluate the impact on local human communities around Ranomafana National Park. Drawing on data from interviews, surveys, field observations, and historical data, we show long-lasting, positive impacts involving community building, infrastructure development, and environmental stewardship which extend beyond program aims. We present our data by first using ideas about collaborative action to elaborate on the program’s management and overall operation style. We then use boundary objects to frame the program within the larger socio-ecological network of this region of Madagascar. Finally, we explain the main feedback systems at work in the development of the CC program.
