Human Rights Education (HRE) is crucial for Sri Lanka, having endured a 26-year-long civil war and various violent experiences arising from ethnic, religious and political tensions. In the context of post-war reconciliation, schools are one of the primary avenues to educate youths about human rights to mitigate the recurrence of past violence and conflicts. HRE, in partnership with Global Citizenship Education (GCE), can contribute to the development of inclusive and just societies. In this paper, I examine the capacity of school curricula to educate young people about human rights, thereby supporting global citizenship. I analyse the secondary civic education curricula to evaluate their alignment with international requirements of HRE and integration of GCE. The results reveal a prioritisation of knowledge over the processes involved in embodying principles of human rights and an inwardly oriented approach for citizenship education. The study recommends enhancing active citizenship without limiting it to national citizenship.
