CRTI 2.1 (Compression–Resonance Tension Index) is a nonlinear information-theoretic framework for diagnosing structural overcompression and ordered fragility in complex adaptive systems. The central axiom states that systemic instability emerges when the rate of enforced structural constraint exceeds the system’s information-processing capacity, independent of whether the system appears chaotic or highly ordered. Structural rigidity is formally defined as the entropy-reduction rate imposed on a channel: Ri = (H(Si) - H(Ai))/(Δ t) where Si denotes the potential state space and Ai the admissible state space. Processing capacity Φi is defined in equivalent units (bits/s), yielding the dimensionless channel tension ratio: Ti = (Ri)/(Φi) To address selective resonance and cascading failure dynamics, CRTI 2.1 introduces a nonlinear coupling extension: Teff = w^\top T + T^\top A T where w encodes bias-corrected channel relevance and A models inter-channel amplification or damping effects. A standardized Boundary & Measurement Protocol ensures: Functional channel delimitation Maximum Observable Variety (MOV) definition Fixed observation windows (Δt) Parsimony constraint (k ≤ 4 channels) Pre-registration to reduce analyst bias Explicit falsifiability criteria CRTI 2.1 is proposed as a formally specified, dimensionally coherent, nonlinear diagnostic instrument for identifying early-warning signals of systemic fragility across heterogeneous domains (organizational, economic, technical, biological). This version consolidates: Channelized formulation (CRTI 2.0) Nonlinear inter-channel coupling Entropy-based definition of structural rigidity Boundary discipline and sensitivity constraints The framework is falsifiable and explicitly documents its limitations, including boundary sensitivity and potential underestimation of latent state-space variety (Dormant Rigidity Problem). Complex Adaptive Systems Information Theory Entropy Reduction Channel Capacity Structural Rigidity Nonlinear Dynamics Cascade Failure Systemic Risk Early Warning Systems Information Bottleneck Entropic Diagnostics Cybernetics Requisite Variety Nonlinear Coupling Organizational Fragility What’s New in CRTI 2.1 CRTI 2.1 represents a methodological consolidation and formal expansion of the previous 2.0 formulation. The following elements distinguish Version 2.1: 1. Entropy-Based Definition of Structural Rigidity Structural rigidity Ri is now formally defined as the entropy-reduction rate imposed on a channel: Ri = (H(Si) - H(Ai))/(Δ t) This replaces phenomenological rigidity metrics with a dimensionally coherent information-theoretic formulation (bits/s), establishing parity with processing capacity Φi. 2. Nonlinear Inter-Channel Coupling CRTI 2.1 introduces a quadratic coupling term: Teff = w^\top T + T^\top A T This allows modeling of cascade effects and contagion dynamics, capturing systemic instability even when individual channel tensions remain subcritical. 3. Bias-Controlled Boundary & Measurement Protocol A standardized protocol now governs: Functional channel delimitation Maximum Observable Variety (MOV) Fixed observation windows (Δt) Parsimony constraint (k ≤ 4) Pre-registration of channels and weights This reduces boundary arbitrariness and enhances falsifiability. 4. Explicit Falsifiability Criteria CRTI 2.1 specifies empirical invalidation conditions, including predictive failure and boundary sensitivity instability. 5. Formal Consolidation Version 2.1 transitions CRTI from a conceptual diagnostic model to a dimensionally coherent, nonlinear, and methodologically disciplined analytical instrument. Version History (1.0 → 2.1 Evolution) CRTI 1.0 – Conceptual Compression Model Initial formulation of systemic instability as imbalance between structural order and adaptive capacity. Primarily qualitative and heuristic. Introduced the core axiom: over-optimization can generate fragility. CRTI 2.0 – Channelized Ratio Model Formalization of the diagnostic ratio: Ti = (Ri)/(Φi) Key advances: Channel-based decomposition (k channels) Introduction of processing capacity Φi Dimensionless tension ratio Early falsifiability framing Limitation: Structural rigidity Ri remained phenomenological. CRTI 2.1 – Nonlinear Entropic Instrument Methodological consolidation and formal expansion. Key additions: Entropy-Based Rigidity DefinitionRi = (H(Si) - H(Ai))/(Δ t)Establishes dimensional parity (bits/s) with processing capacity. Nonlinear Coupling TermTeff = w^\top T + T^\top A TModels cascade amplification and inter-channel contagion. Boundary & Measurement Protocol Maximum Observable Variety (MOV) Parsimony constraint (k ≤ 4) Pre-registration Fixed observation windows Explicit Falsifiability & Sensitivity CriteriaFormal invalidation conditions defined. CRTI 2.1 represents the first fully specified, dimensionally coherent, nonlinear, and falsifiable iteration of the framework.
