This Perspective documents the evolution of a long-term independent research program that began with the search for a universal principle governing the loss of self-correction in nonlinear complex adaptive systems. Rather than confirming this initial hypothesis, years of mathematical exploration and empirical observations progressively redirected the research toward a different question: under which observation conditions can Early Warning Signals provide scientifically reliable information? The manuscript describes how negative results, hypothesis revision, and methodological reflection ultimately led to the development of BenchEWS, an open metrological benchmark infrastructure for the reproducible evaluation of observation strategies and Early Warning Indicators. This publication is not a validation study of BenchEWS. Instead, it provides the conceptual and historical background that motivated its development and documents the evolution of the underlying research questions in the spirit of transparency and Open Science. The author hopes that this perspective may contribute to discussions on scientific self-correction, reproducibility, metrology, and evidence-driven evolution of research programs. The usefulness of the resulting infrastructure should ultimately be determined through independent evaluation, replication, extension, and critical scientific discussion.
