This report describes the construction of a paper and pencil inventory to assess severity of stuttering. A rationally constructed inventory of behaviors and attitudes related to stuttering was administered to 50 normal speakers and 50 stutterers attending college-connected speech clinics. Items for assessing defensiveness were also included. Each stutterer had been rated by a clinician for the severity of his speech problem. Of the 120 items specifically pertaining to stuttering, 64 discriminated between stutterers and normals and also among three levels of stuttering severity. An attempt to correct for defensiveness was abandoned since it did not improve discrimination. Preliminary cross-validation data showed that stutterers continued to be widely distributed on the scale and well separated from almost all normals.
