Artificially intelligent technologies – i.e., technologies that can take over tasks that human beings use their intelligence to perform – raise questions about moral responsibility. As we move into a future where more and more aspects of human life will involve different forms of artificial intelligence, we will need to reconsider or update our ideas about what people can be held responsible for. This chapter will discuss what AI means for the future of responsibility, including whether there might be so-called responsibility gaps that need to be filled related to both praise and blame for outcomes produced by AI technologies. As the chapter argues, philosophical reflection on responsibility gaps related to AI needs to take into account various asymmetries with respect to people's motivations and incentives in relation to praise and blame, on the one hand, as well as the normative criteria for being praiseworthy and blameworthy, on the other hand.
