Kinetosomes are the basic symmetrical unit responsible for anterior–posterior polarity, and a right–left axis in cells. The asymmetry orients the cytoskeleton from microtubule organizing centers . How kinetosomes replicate, and link to each other varies. Microsurgery experiments with ciliates large enough to manipulate provided clues to the underlying mechanisms. There are epigenetic mechanisms to transfer information from the macronucleus to the micronucleus . Epigenetics is important in ciliate inheritance of mating types, and other adaptations and transcription regulation . Some mutations cause changes to this order, and provide clues to the underlying regulation. The mutations can be traced to particular proteins. They can be recognized across the biodiversity, and provide clues to protist morphology changes through evolution.
