In its latest stage, the World Wide Web (Web 2.0), together with the technological affordances it has brought, has paved the way for the emergence of a wide array of digital communication practices that have entirely changed the way knowledge is created, disseminated, and shared. Specialized communication is one of the fields in which the high degree of connectivity and interactivity allowed by Web 2.0 has had a stronger impact on the way participants produce information, communicate it, recontextualize it, and, on the whole, interact with others. The unprecedented expansion and the complexities of online communication explain the enormous interest that producing, consuming, and sharing specialized knowledge through websites, blogs, and social media, among other digital formats, are raising in very diverse fields of study, from linguistics and discourse analysis to sociology and communication studies. In this chapter we will provide an overview of the most widely used digital practices and genres, especially in the fields of business and economics, tourism and science. It is, thus, our aim to identify which aspects have gained attention in the analysis of digital discourse on the web, as well as which have been the main analytical and methodological perspectives adopted in previous research.
