An effective title captures a reader’s attention, while strategically-selected keywords are the invisible engine that drives the findability and citability of research in the digital era. Modern scientific discovery is increasingly algorithm-driven. This editorial introduces a 6-part framework to transform keyword selection from a secondary metadata task into a primary pillar of technical writing. We move beyond traditional indexing assumptions to introduce a dual-role strategy: anchoring and expansion . While anchoring reinforces core terms from the title to satisfy search engine density, expansion broadens semantic reach to capture interdisciplinary citations. Specifically, this editorial addresses: 1) Discovery engine : why keywords serve as the fundamental blueprint of research visibility; 2) Algorithmic hierarchy: the synergy between title terms and keyword metadata; 3) 2-step protocol: a practical method for distilling the specific scope and broader scale of a study; 4) Hybrid strategy: balancing verbatim repetition with semantic synonyms to maximize search reach; 5) Power of precision: utilizing multi-word phrases to improve keyword granularity; and 6) Final imperative: treating metadata as a core component of scientific communication. By following this framework, authors can ensure their work is effectively indexed, retrieved, and cited across the global scientific landscape.
