Compton scattering is one of the few spectroscopies which directly probes the ground state momentum density in materials. Recent progress in synchrotron light sources has brought a renewed interest in the technique as a tool for investigating fermiology related issues on the one hand, and as a unique window on hitherto inaccessible correlation effects in the electron gas on the other. We provide an overview of some of our recent work on a variety of metals and disordered alloys, including Li, \rm Li1-xMgx, Be, Cu, \rm Ni75Cu25, \rm Ni75Co25, Al and Al-Li.
