Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health emergency that threatens to negate advances in oncology by compromising the effective management of infection-related complications of cancer treatment. Although the indirect effects of anticancer therapy on AMR risk are well described, data on the direct influence of chemotherapeutic agents in selecting or mitigating bacterial drug resistance remain scarce. We explore the current preclinical evidence on the effect of anticancer treatments on AMR and outline the required next steps needed to further quantify its clinical relevance.
