Abstract

Because much of North America was untouched by the Revolutionary War, California and other regions distant from the East Coast appear peripheral to the signal events of the era. A less parochial vantage point, however, shifts the focus from the British colonies. In an alternative Native geography, California was not isolated on the far edge of the continent but situated squarely in the Indigenous communication and exchange networks that spanned North America.
