Abstract

Two important problems of continental tectonics may be resolved by recognizing that most subduction zone backarcs have hot, thin, and weak lithospheres over considerable widths. These are (1) the origin of long-lived active “mobile belts” contrasted to the stability of cratons and platforms, and (2) the origin of the heat of continental collision orogeny.
