Abstract

PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARYCommunity health worker Idolina Castro relates a heart-wrenching story from La Vida en la Frontera research study in southern Yuma County, Arizona about one family’s isolation in the face of severe challenges related to mental health and chronic disease. Her interest is in the intersection of physical and mental health at the family level, and how promotores can play an important role in connecting people to medical and support services and improving communication dynamics within the family. Idolina uses this story to speak more broadly about how home-based health outreach studies can have very tangible and positive impacts on people’s lives by shedding light on what many suffer behind closed doors.
