Abstract In 1979 and 1980, the fungi causing cucumber powdery mildew were investigated in Czechoslovakia. In 37 localities in the major growing 102 samples of mildew were collected. Most of them came from cucumber leaves (especially from field cultures), few came from squash leaves. Studies of the imperfect stage served to identify, in the samples, two pathogen species, viz. Erysiphe cichoracearum and Sphaerotheca fuliginea have been found. E. cichoracearum predominated under field conditions; S. fuliginea was found in only two localities. In glasshouses S. fuliginea predominated.
