Petrological study of the granitic rocks around the Yangsan Fault: Lateral Displacement of the Yangsan Fault

Abstract

It has been observed that symmetrical characteristics are present with respect to textures, mineralogy, and major geochemistry among the granitic rocks around the Yangsan Fault, suggesting that the geographic distribution and peculiar lithology of the granitic rocks is related with the displacement of the fault. The granitic rocks in the study area can be classified into two groups, which, in turn, are sub-grouped into five rock facies based on the occurrence and intrusion relationship, mineral composition and textures, and contents of mafic microgranular enclave and/or mafic clot. Group I comprises three rock facies including granodiorite, enclave-rich porphyritic granite, and enclave-poor porphyritic granite, and Group II includes equigranular granite and micrographic granite. The lithology indicates that the rock facies in the western and eastern block of the Yangsan Fault have their own counterparts showing the same geochemical characteristics and rock facies. This specific arrangement of the granitic rock possibly lead to the correlation between granitic rocks by sinistral strike-slip movement of Yangsan Fault 21.3 km toward N20°E direction along the inferred fault line in the Eonyang area. Thus, we suggest that the granitic rocks emplaced in the Gyeongsang Basin prior to the movement of the Yangsan Fault and the fault moved dextrally 21.3 km in N20°E direction along the inferred fault line.
