In this work, the effects of heat treatment at 1200 ℃ for 6, 12 and 24 h on the microstructure, damping capacity and tensile properties of as-cast Al 0.5 CrFe 2 Ni medium entropy alloy (MEA) were investigated. The results indicate that the phase constituents of Al 0.5 CrFe 2 Ni MEA remain the face-centred cubic (FCC) and body-centred cubic (BCC) phases after heat treatment, but the volume fraction of the FCC phase is significantly increased from 7.91 vol% of the as-cast sample to 56 vol% of the 6 hrs-treated sample and then decreased to 35.4 vol% of the 12 hrs-treated sample and further increased to 37.7 vol% for the 24 hrs-treated sample.The damping capacity was significantly improved after heat treatment for different periods. The relatively larger damping capacities are the alloys treated at 1200 ℃ for 12 and 24 h with Q −1 of 0.073 and 0.071 respectively, both improved by more than 28 % compared to the as-cast alloy. The as-treated alloys also show a significant increase in plastic strain in addition to the increase in damping capacity, indicating that the alloy has good mechanical properties and damping capacity and is expected to be used as a candidate of damping materials.
