Abstract Taking note of the tendency of some authors in contemporary philosophy and theology to assume that medieval Christian theology as such is ontotheology, the essay first reviews several current uses of ontotheology and its correlates. It then tests these uses against the theology of Bonaventure, who is often included but often unexamined in these current critiques of medieval ontotheology. It concludes that Bonaventure is not ontotheological, but perhaps surprisingly, he offers a critique of his fellow scholastics that has striking resonance with Heideggerian and other postmodern worries about the uses of ontology in particular and scholastic reasoning more generally.
