We investigate the formation and stability of elliptic solitons and elliptic dipole solitons in competing nonlocal nonlinear media with anisotropic diffraction. Analytical solutions for elliptic solitons are obtained using the variational method. The relationship of the critical power for forming stable solitons with the degree of nonlocality and the thermal nonlinear coefficient is given, revealing a typical bistable bifurcation structure. The influence of anisotropic diffraction and the incident beam’s ellipticity parameters on the critical power is analyzed. The dynamic propagation characteristics of elliptic beams are numerically simulated using the split-step Fourier method.
