Abstract

Adults of two species of water mites, Piona carnea (Koch) and Limnesia undulata (Muller), readily preyed upon a number of species of chironomid larvae under laboratory conditions. The observed rate of feeding and the inability of the water mites to withstand prolonged periods of starvation suggest that they are significant predators of chironomid larvae in the natural environment.
