Ancient lakes are biodiversity hotspots that harbour many endemic species. A new species of Gyraulus (Gastropoda, Planorbidae), Gyraulus xingtian sp. nov. [刑天旋螺] is described from Lake Dianchi, an ancient lake in Yunnan, southwestern China. The species is characterised by having a closed umbilicus and possessing a tooth near the inner lip. It is significantly distinguished from all other species in Gyraulus and provides new insights into the morphological diversity of this genus. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on a combined dataset of mitochondrial and nuclear markers (COI + ITS1 + ITS2 + cytb) supports the species’ position within Gyraulus.
