Abstract

According to the ‘grow or go’ model, cancer cells can switch between invasive and proliferative states. A zebrafish model of skin cancer shows that the invasive switch is triggered by mechanical compression of the cancer cells by surrounding tissues. In this way, the physical environment can reprogramme the cell to dictate cancer behaviour. The switch between proliferation and invasion is triggered by mechanical force.
