To mark the 75th anniversary of The Gerontological Society of America, Pillemer and colleagues (2020) posited that concerns raised about caring for older people in 1946 are similar to those made today. The number of older adults needing care is still increasing at an alarming rate, and providing care for them remains a complex issue. After decades of evidence documenting the sacrifices and dedication of family caregivers, the preface of this book still needs to make the argument that many family caregivers are, in fact, sacrificing themselves to care for a loved one. The preface states that our society believes family and friends should care for their loved ones, but there is a shortage of family members and a lack of time to provide the care that is required.
