It is with a sense of urgency and hope that we present this special issue of Perspectives in Education. The idea for this collection emerged from the Education Deans’ Forum Colloquium held in Kempton Mark on 17 May 2024. During this gathering, scholars from across South Africa reflected on the alarming findings of the 2023 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), which revealed that many Grade 4 learners are unable to read for meaning. This literacy crisis is not merely a policy concern; it affects millions of children whose educational opportunities are constrained by language barriers and limited access to effective literacy instruction.
