ABSTRACT Within the Carbon2Chem project, a range of technologies and process concepts have been developed for the chemical utilization of steel mill gases (SMGs) to produce sustainable chemicals and fuels. Their technical feasibility has been demonstrated at pilot scale at the thyssenkrupp steel mill in Duisburg, Germany. This publication reviews the process concepts and assessments for converting SMGs to methanol (MeOH), focusing on energy efficiency, and the regulatory framework. Producing MeOH from SMGs requires less specific energy than other carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies, and it is ready for further technological maturation. The broad Carbon2Chem portfolio offers wide‐ranging applications as steel mills transition toward climate neutrality.
