Impact of Night-Shift Work on the Metabolic Health of Hospital Healthcare Workers: A Systematic Review

Abstract

This literature review examined the association between night-shift work and metabolic syndrome among healthcare professionals. Twelve studies, including cohort and cross-sectional designs, were analyzed, revealing that night work—particularly rotating shifts—significantly increases the risk of metabolic syndrome. Key mechanisms include circadian disruption, sleep deprivation, and hormonal alterations affecting glucose and lipid metabolism. Central obesity, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance were the most consistently affected components, with hypertension emerging later. Risk was modulated by shift intensity, cumulative duration, age, sex, chronotype, and lifestyle factors. Preventive strategies integrating occupational and behavioral interventions are essential to mitigate metabolic risk among night-shift healthcare workers.
