The processes of datafication are raising various questions on the societal macro level as well as on the organizational-institutional meso level and the individual micro level. One of these questions is addressed here: Are influences of datafication in editorial offices driving forces of innovation in journalism? Based on a preliminary search, experts for datafication in German-speaking countries were identified and interviewed. The gathered insights formed the basis for the structure of a standardized questionnaire sent electronically to selected Austrian newspaper journalists. The results show that innovation is most evident regarding the visualization of large datasets (e.g., interactive graphics and dashboards), changes in editorial structures (e.g., implementation of data teams and -experts), new narrative forms (e.g., digital storytelling and multimedia formats), and general influences on content selection based on real time evaluation of news consumption behavior.
