Abstract

Following a discussion on the characteristics of combustion aerosols, various aspects of the performance of residential smoke detectors are reviewed with emphasis on operation mechanisms, positioning, waking effectiveness, and capability and limitations. Recommendations are made for future research to improve the understanding of smoke detection practices.
