Speech by Franciszek Ksawery Dmochowski on Ignacy Krasicki and its Translation into Russian by Pyotr Hulak-Artemovskyi This article off ers a historical-literary and historical-press analysis of a neglected episode in Polish-Russian-Ukrainian literary relations in the fi rst half of the nineteenth century, focusing on Franciszek Ksawery Dmochowski’s Speech for the Commemoration of Ignacy Krasicki (1801) and its Russian translation by Pyotr Hulak-Artemovskyi, produced at the Department of Polish Language at Kharkiv University. Adopting a qualitative methodology that integrates critical-literary analysis, comparative (genetic) methods, and intertextuality studies, the research examines the Polish editions of Dmochowski’s speech published in Nowy Pamiętnik Warszawski (1802) and Krasicki’s collected poetry, alongside its appearance in the Ukrainskii Vestnik (Kharkiv, 1818). The study analyzes textual variations between the original and the translation, demonstrating that the translator used a collected edition of Krasicki’s works and preserved the full main text while appending editorial and translator footnotes providing biographical and contextual information. Findings reveal that Hulak-Artemovskyi adapted the speech’s function from an occasional tribute for Polish readers to an outline of Polish literary history serving as educational material for Russian-speaking students. By reconstructing this cross-cultural exchange, the article contributes to understanding the dynamics of literary mediation and educational adaptation in nineteenth-century East European intellectual networks.
