Abstract The collected volume Colonisations: notre histoire (Paris: Éditions du Seuil, 2023) is a landmark publication that offers a critical assessment of France’s fraught role in global history, ranging from the precolonial era to the present. It makes a powerful case for the continuing relevance of the complex history of colonialism in France and the world today. This roundtable features reflections on the volume by four historians working on different parts of the French Empire, followed by a response authored by the editorial collective who worked together to produce the volume. Taken together, these interventions reveal some of the challenges and opportunities involved in writing the history of colonialism, and confront major issues facing all historians engaging with the legacy of the global past amid the tensions and crises of the present.
