The aim of this review is to assess the adsorption performance of four adsorbents derived from agricultural waste for the elimination of various pollutants from wastewater. The biomass wastes chosen are olive stones, date stones, argan nut shells, and eggshells, which are available and abundant in Morocco. Literature shows that these by-products in their raw state as well as chemically and physically modified forms have supplied excellent results for the removal of various classes of dyes, heavy metals, and phenols. These materials are good precursors for the manufacture of activated carbon with a large specific surface area and a perfectly porous structure that gives them good adsorbent capacities. The conditions of activation, such as the nature of the activating agent, the impregnation ratio, and the pyrolysis temperature, have a significant effect on the textural properties. The present review article summarizes the current research carried out on the characterization and the valorization of the four biomasses as low-cost adsorbents.
