Abstract

Prolonged and excessive use of synthetic pesticides has led to pest resistance and contamination of soil, water, and air, threatening vital environmental resources. Plant-derived pesticides offer a sustainable, eco-friendly alternative, potentially improving agricultural productivity, food security, and consumer health. We evaluated the insecticidal efficacy of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) essential oils (EOs) against potato aphids (Macrosiphum euphorbiae). EOs were extracted via hydrodistillation and tested in a completely randomized design with four replicates at 25°C and 65 ± 5% relative humidity, assessing mortality 24 hours post-treatment. Probit analysis using Minitab software (version 17) determined LC50 and LC90 values of 8,417 ppm and 47,774 ppm for lavender EO, and 10,315 ppm and 49,905 ppm for rosemary EO, respectively. Field comparisons of lavender EO at 8,417 ppm (LC50) with imidacloprid at 1 g/L (diluted 1:1000) showed imidacloprid efficacy of 91.4–98.3% and lavender EO efficacy of 41.6–47.8%. These results confirm the significant insecticidal potential of EOs, positioning them as viable alternatives to chemical insecticides for future pest management programs
