Abstract: This research examines Aristophanes' role as both a comic playwright and a literary critic, focusing on his critiques of contemporary poets such as Euripides and Aeschylus. Through an analysis of key plays like The Clouds, The Frogs, and Thesmophoriazusae, the study highlights Aristophanes' emphasis on the moral, social, and artistic responsibilities of literature. He criticized Euripides for his association with the Sophists and his excessive use of rhetoric, while praising Aeschylus for his noble themes and grand style. Aristophanes believed that literature should elevate society by promoting ethical values and intellectual growth, rather than merely entertaining or manipulating audiences. His critiques laid the groundwork for later literary theorists like Plato and Aristotle, influencing the development of Western literary criticism. The research underscores the enduring relevance of Aristophanes' ideas, particularly in discussions about the role of art in society.
