Nucleation and growth of pores in AlSi6Mg4Cu4, AlSi6Cu4, AlCu10, AlSi7 alloys were examined in situ using X-ray tomoscopy. The pore evolution in the foaming precursors was visualized in three dimensions as a function of time. The phases in the alloys were characterised using microscopy. The evolution of the phases with temperature was studied using X-ray tomoscopy. The pore formation was correlated with the temperatures at which different phases formed or evolved. From these studies, the preferred locations for pore initiation were identified. Also, variation in pore size and shape with temperature was studied in detail.
