This paper is intended as background information to supplement the design procedures presented in the Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation's publications New Housing and Airport Noise and Road and Rail Noise: Effects on Housing. It deals with the basic nature of the acoustic insulation factor and provides specific details relevant to its application for insulation against aircraft and surface transportation noise. A detailed procedure is given for determining the AIF from the laboratory sound transmission loss data for a building component.
