The myth of the vampire is both ancient and modern: elements have changed over time but the essence of the myth has stayed the same; this is true across different cultures and civilizations. The paper argues that the hardiness of the myth can be partly explained by its significance to the human mind, the depth of which can revealed through application of the psychoanalytical theories of Jung and Freud. These theoretical perspectives shed new light on the myth and demonstrate its versatility as a vehicle for the expression of our most primitive fears and fixations.
