Abstract

Effect of the shear strain on the microstructure formation in metastable β Ti-15Mo alloy has been studied. The material was subjected to cold severe plastic deformation (SPD) by two methods, high-pressure torsion (HPT) and equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP). Grains with sizes less than 1 μm oriented in the straining direction, shear bands and developed dislocation substructure were observed in the microstructure after ECAP. An ultrafine-grained structure with equiaxed β-phase grains with an average size of 150 nm was formed in Ti-15Mo after HPT. This paper discusses the peculiarities of α-phase particle morphology after aging at 600°C depending on the type of structure formed during SPD.
