Abstract

Diseases are now recognized to arise from natural causes, not supernatural forces, as first proposed by Hippocrates. Modern medicine identifies five main categories: infectious agents, genetic factors, lifestyle choices, environmental exposures, and nutritional/metabolic issues. Most diseases emerge from a complex interplay of these factors. Whether illness occurs often depends on host traits (e.g., immunity, age) and pathogen characteristics (e.g., virulence, dose). This review outlines each cause, highlighting key examples and research.
