We discuss the problem of estimating the characteristic length scale\n\ξ rm s, and hence the initial density, of a system of cosmic strings\nformed at a continuous, second-order phase transition in the early universe. In\nparticular, we examine the roles of the correlation length (or string width)\n\ξ rm c and the Ginzburg length \ξ rm G which defines the\n``fuzziness'' of long strings. We argue that strings acquire a clear identity\nonly once \ξ rm s exceeds both \ξ rm c and \ξ rm G, and\nestimate its magnitude at that time.\n
