Several types of refractories that may be used for bottom paving have been used in 300 h crucible tests to measure the rate of accelerated bottom corrosion by metals with a white flint glass. The effects of temperature, type of metal and volume of metal have been investigated. It is shown that none of the types of refractories tested is resistant to such attack at temperatures above 1300 °C. To minimize the rate of drilling dense homogeneous refractories with good corrosion resistance are most suitable. Among the metals tested tin and lead gave the most intense drilling, followed by copper and fron. Aluminium, zinc and molybdenum oxidize at differing rates and the oxide then dissolves in the melt so that the drilling ceases.
