Facing the ban on neonicotinoids, we conducted an agronomic study aimed at identifying the agronomic causes (and explanatory practices) responsible for variations in aphid infestations and severity of yellow disease in the field, and at collectively designing disease management scenarios. Based on farmer and advisor observations, data and literature, we show that the risk of yellow disease depends on 3 major agronomic factors: the distance between the sugar beet plot and the nearest seed beet fields; the concentration of beets in the plot environment; and the stage of the sugar beets at the time of aphid arrival, a function of sowing date and spring climate. On the basis of this knowledge and that produced in all the PNRI projects, we have collectively designed 10 disease management scenarios, some of which are currently being tested.
