Abstract

Background: Breastfeeding, in the case of Human Immunodeficiency Virus-infectedmothers, represents a potentialrisk of virus transmission. Objective: The aim of thisworkwas to determine the rate of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) transmis- sion throughantiretroviral-protectedbreastfeeding as recommended by the World Health Organization in 2010, and the profile of infectedchildren. Methods: The study was retrospective and descriptive of 93 HIV-exposed infants monitored for 18 months, benefitingfrom a protected breastfeeding, and with a negative Polymerase Chain Reaction at six weeks of life. Results : Mothers were infected with HIV-1 in 96. 8% of cases. The average duration of exclusive breast- feedingwas 6 months. At the end of follow-up, two infants were HIV-positive, whichrepresentsa trans- mission rate of 2. 2%. The mothers of these infants were on antiretroviral treatment respectively for twomonths and 48 monthsbeforedelivery. Adhe- rence to antiretroviral treatmentwaspoor in both- mothers. One of the infants hadreceivedearly diver- sification at 4 months. Conclusion: This study suggests that breastfeeding protected by ARTs in the mother is an interesting al- ternative for poor countries.
