Abstract

The study was conducted in Kobo and Gubalafto districts of Northern Wello zone of the Amhara regional state to phenotypically characterize and develop predictive equations  to estimate goat body weight from linear body measurements for local goats. Household survey was conducted on 240 randomly selected farmers and a total of 762 goats from both sexes were  used for morphological measurements. The dominant coat color type in Kobo site was white dominant on black and light red while in Gubalafto site, but the districts overall result was showed similar coat color. about 97.8% of male goats and 96.8% of female goats are horned. the average observed pooled age of body length, chest width, height at wither, chest girth and body weight for female goats were 47.97,  13.88, 43.97, 46.21 cm, and 19.17 kg respectively, while that for male goats was 46.81, 14.66, 45.66, 47.70 cm, 22.68 kg and 6.07 cm for scrotum circumstance, respectively. The prediction regression equation by using chest girth as explanatory variable was y=1.59 +0.38* CG for female sample population and y= -0.21 + 0.48* CG  for male sample goat population.
