Abstract

Objectives: High rates of relapse following a substance use disorder treatment (SUD) highlight the importance of effective therapies. The Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) program stands as a potentially effective group-based treatment. The present study develops a randomized controlled trial evaluating the efficacy of an individualized adaptation of the MBRP (I-MBRP) compared to a relaxation training (RT). Methods: 108 detoxified outpatients in treatment for SUD´s were randomized to I-MBRP (n = 54) or RT (n =54). Participants completed self-reports measuring substance use, craving, impulsivity, and mindfulness at pre-treatment, post-treatment and follow-up at two months and four months. Results: After treatments, the RT showed a pattern of returning to baseline levels in all variables, while I-MBRP tended to maintain benefits across time. While both groups showed improvements in consumption, craving and impulsivity at post-treatment, the I-MBRP group maintained benefits across follow-up compared to RT. Compared to RP, participants assigned to I-MBRP reported significantly lower days of substance use at the 2-month follow-up and craving and dysfunctional impulsivity were significantly lower at the 4-month follow-up. Also, mindfulness was significantly higher at both follow-ups. Conclusions: Coherently with theoretical models, the I-MBRP shows potential effects on SUDs relapse prevention. This study provides the first evidence that individual adaptation of the MBRP can be as effective as group-based MBRP. Clinical implications are discussed.
