Abstract

Environments involving health services have been the focus of special attention to minimize the spread of microorganisms. UVC light systems are known to have a very powerful germicidal effect capable of inactivating a broad spectrum of microorganisms, such as viruses, bacteria, protozoa, fungi, yeasts and algae, through the formation of pyrimidine dimers. Pyrimidine dimerisation disrupts DNA replication and transcription, which leads to agent death. In this context, this study will systematically review the literature to explore the germicidal effect of UVC light on fungal and bacterial microorganisms present in medical and dental environments. Methods and approaches recognized and advocated in the literature will be adopted in the execution of this study. Systematic searches using descriptors and Boolean operators will be performed in different databases. Records that present the following characteristics will be included: (1) quantitative studies that evaluated the effectiveness of ultraviolet light emission in the disinfection of medical/dental environments; (2) quantitative studies that evaluated the effectiveness of ultraviolet light emission in the disinfection of clinical instruments; (3) quantitative studies that evaluated the effectiveness of ultraviolet light emission in the disinfection of microorganisms on laboratory plates; (4) studies that included a control group - environment/instruments/plates not exposed to ultraviolet light; (5) studies that used ultraviolet light with a wavelength ≥ 100 nanometers. Two independent researchers will perform the selection of studies, risk analysis and the assessment of the certainty of the evidence. The results of this study will be disseminated by presenting the evidence at international academic conferences and by publishing a scientific paper.
